Canadian Oil Sands Narratives: Does the Media Provide Balanced Coverage of Energy Issues in Canada?
Thursday, February 12, 2015
6:00 – 8:00 pm
Ryerson University, Toronto

Journalism can provide critical insight to shape the national public perception of social issues as well as inform citizens who have the ability to influence public policy. Recognizing that most Canadians likely receive their information about Canada’s oil sands through news media outlets rather than primary sources, journalists are expected to provide balanced coverage of the energy sector and other linkages such as, but not limited to:

  • environmental consequences,
  • the impact on rural and First Nation communities,
  • and driving global market influences.

The proposed event expects to bring experts together to discuss the extent to which Canadian journalism promotes or inhibits practical discussion on the Oil Sands.

Panelists will include:

John Daly, contributor to the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine
John Shmuel, reporter at Financial Post
Dr. Keith Stewart, climate and energy campaigner with Greenpeace Canada

The discussion will be moderated by Julie Cazzin, Ryerson School of Journalism
